Rethinking Security and Responsible Governance in the Age of AI
This lecture will explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping our societies and creating new opportunities to address global challenges. In particular, it will examine how AI can strengthen our ability to detect and respond to security threats, while also considering the unprecedented challenges arising from its growing use. The lecture will highlight the importance of international cooperation in shaping this transformation and the role of the United Nations in fostering responsible and inclusive AI governance to ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably.
Bio: Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala is the Rector of the United Nations University and an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously, he served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pretoria. His research applies artificial intelligence across disciplines, including engineering, economics, finance, medicine, and the social sciences. Prof. Marwala is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Scientific Advisory Board, the author of more than 30 books, and co-holder of five patents. He is, inter alia, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Science of South Africa, and the African Academy of Sciences, as well as a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
