Titolo: From optimal control to optimal decision support: Applications to epidemics containment strategies

Abstract: Optimal control techniques applied to dynamical systems allow to compute the best state evolution along with the best control action according to a predefined cost associated to the state and the control. Changing the costs reflects to different optimal solutions.The talk aims at showing how, choosing the costs according to possible sets of conditions on the system evolution, it is possible to have a discontinuous state-dependent optimality criterion which produces different optimal solutions according to the system behaviour. The decision support is then based on a relationship between such solutions and different high-level decisions on the action strategies to be adopted. A current example is the periodic update of the social containment measures according to the evaluation of the population health conditions with respect to the COVID-19.

Bio sketch: Paolo Di Giamberardino is Researcher in Control Engineering at the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering A. Ruberti, Sapienza University of Rome since 1996. He received the M.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering (1991) and the PhD in Systems Engineering (1994) from the same University.He is member of the editorial board of international journals, editor of special issues, member of the technical/scientific committee of international conferences, and organizer of international conferences. He is supervisor of PhD students and of numerous first and second level theses (10-15 per year). He is currently teacher of the courses “Fundamentals of Automatic Control” and “Systems Theory”.Head of the “Systems and Control Laboratory” and co-head of the “E-learning systems and applications laboratory”. His main research interests are: analysis and control of non-linear discrete time systems or continuous time systems under sampling; planning, control and coordination of mobile robots; control and communication for fixed and mobile sensor networks;
vision systems for robot control; systems for e-learning and for remote measurement, monitoring and control; modeling, identification and optimal control in complex biomedical systems (epidemics spread, medical diagnostics).
