Title: New Life for Sensor Networks: The Window of Opportunity of Lighting Retrofit

Abstract
. Much of the work on sensor networks had been concerned with providing and using both energy and communication in an optimally efficient manner.  However, a new opportunity is emerging which obviates these requirements, as well a offering installation at low marginal cost: lighting retrofit inside buildings. This opportunity could provide ubiquitous sensor networks in both domestic and non domestic buildings, but once a major lighting retrofit has been made in a given building the opportunity will pass.  It is thus important to understand the benefits and challenges of sensor networks in energy demand reduction, security and care of the elderly, or more generally, redefining the relationship between building and
occupants.
We will examine the reasons why an overhaul of lighting systems is likely, why it is so conducive to supporting sensor networks and look to future challenges and opportunities.
