The seminar focuses on the technology stack of artificial intelligence systems, analyzing its geopolitical/geostrategic impacts as well as the role played by AI on the international stage in the strategic competition between dominant states and the main economic players. The seminar will also introduce elements of technological sovereignty by describing the challenges related to securing the supply chain of digital technologies, with particular reference to the key AI components across the stack.
The key roles played by some components will also be presented (e.g. CPUs, GPUs and memories). Specific focus will be given to the scarcity of raw materials and the complexity of the technologies underlying large AI systems (semiconductors, critical minerals, cloud services), with a view to identifying possible critical elements and how they can cause geopolitical tensions between state actors and the related vendor and supply chain strategies (vendor lock in, choke points, vertical stack colonization).

Seminar held within the Seminar in AI and Robotics course of the Laurea Magistrale in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
