DESCRIPTION:The seminar focuses on the technology stack of artificial intel
ligence systems\, analyzing its geopolitical/geostrategic impacts as well
as the role played by AI on the international stage in the strategic compe
tition between dominant states and the main economic players. The seminar
will also introduce elements of technological sovereignty by describing th
e challenges related to securing the supply chain of digital technologies\
, with particular reference to the key AI components across the stack. The
key roles played by some components will also be presented (e.g. CPUs\, GP
Us and memories). Specific focus will be given to the scarcity of raw mate
rials and the complexity of the technologies underlying large AI systems (
semiconductors\, critical minerals\, cloud services)\, with a view to iden
tifying possible critical elements and how they can cause geopolitical ten
sions between state actors and the related vendor and supply chain strateg
ies (vendor lock in\, choke points\, vertical stack colonization).  Semina
r held within the Seminar in AI and Robotics course of the Laurea Magistra
le in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
