Title: Structured Semantic Representations and Language Models: The Case of Semantic Role Labeling
Over the years, Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) -- the task of identifying the semantic relations between predicates and their arguments -- has attracted continued interest. Enticed by the prospect of acquiring one of the ingredients that might enable Natural Language Understanding, the research community has striven to overcome numerous challenges in SRL.
In this talk, we are going to overview recent research in SRL, including how to address multiple languages and different linguistic theories, but also study the benefits that language models have brought to SRL. Not only that, but we will also discuss what benefits SRL can bring to large language models. In other words, can SRL help us to improve increasingly sophisticated language models?
Simone Conia, currently a research intern at Apple, has recently graduated from Sapienza University of Rome, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in May 2023. His research interests revolve around semantics and multilinguality in Natural Language Processing, with a focus on structured representations, knowledge graphs, and applications of language models. His work has been published in numerous top-tier conferences in the fields of NLP and AI, including ACL, IJCAI, EMNLP, and NAACL.
