tructured Semantic Representations and Language Models: The Case of Semant
ic Role LabelingAbstract:Over the years\, Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) --
the task of identifying the semantic relations between predicates and thei
r arguments -- has attracted continued interest. Enticed by the prospect o
f acquiring one of the ingredients that might enable Natural Language Unde
rstanding\, the research community has striven to overcome numerous challe
nges in SRL.In this talk\, we are going to overview recent research in SRL
\, including how to address multiple languages and different linguistic th
eories\, but also study the benefits that language models have brought to
SRL. Not only that\, but we will also discuss what benefits SRL can bring
to large language models. In other words\, can SRL help us to improve incr
 easingly sophisticated language models?Short bio:Simone Conia\, currently
a research intern at Apple\, has recently graduated from Sapienza Universi
ty of Rome\, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in May 2023.
His research interests revolve around semantics and multilinguality in Nat
ural Language Processing\, with a focus on structured representations\, kn
owledge graphs\, and applications of language models. His work has been pu
blished in numerous top-tier conferences in the fields of NLP and AI\, inc
 luding ACL\, IJCAI\, EMNLP\, and NAACL.
