RECOMmENceR will implement and validate a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)-controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) device (RECOM) for upper limb rehabilitation after stroke based on online detection of cortico-muscular activation. In brief, we will implement a novel hybrid BCI system in which the control feature will be derived from a combined Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electromyography (EMG) connectivity pattern estimated online during upper limb movement attempts. In Aim 1, we will implement the RECOM device from an available EEG-EMG BCI prototype. Aim 2 is devoted to the clinical validation of the approach within a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) in chronic stroke patients. In Aim 3, we will explore changes in neurophysiological parameters possibly related to the intervention (plasticity).
