Green product innovation: where we are and where we are going

Over the past few years green product innovation (GPI) has acquired a growing relevance for policy makers, companies, and society as a whole. As a result, the number of studies on GPI development has increased substantially, thus prompting the need to analyse and synthesize the results of these studies. To this aim, I’ll present the results of a systematic review of the literature that I recently conducted. Specifically, the antecedents, the outcomes, and the success factors of GPI development will be highlighted. Results show that many factors drive the development of GPI, both internal and external to the firm. Among internal factors, the most important are the prospect of competitive advantage, costs reduction, and market benefits, improved reputation, and opportunities for innovation. Among external factors, the most important are environmental regulations and market demand. In terms of outcomes, this study puts in evidence that the most relevant ones are cost savings, achievement of competitive advantage, increased market share, increased sales, increased turnover, higher profits, better reputation, increased exports, and higher productivity. Finally, this study highlights that many factors can influence the successful development of GPI, such as top management commitment, building networks of collaborations as well as enhancing knowledge flows, both within and outside the firm, cross-functional integration, and development of resources and capabilities. Results on success factors are also analyzed and presented though the lens of the resource-based view. This study also highlights contrasting results and limitations in the current body of knowledge, so providing clear directions for further research. In the last part of the seminar, I’ll present preliminary results of an ongoing empirical research that I’m conducting in order to deepen and advance our knowledge on some open questions and contrasting results related to GPI, as emerged from the systematic review. This research involved data collection through a survey of about 200 Italian companies that developed green products and obtained eco-labels for them.
Rosa Maria Dangelico received the "laurea" degree with top graduation mark in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Bari in 2006. In February 2010 she received her PhD degree in Innovation Management and Product Development from "Scuola Interpolitecnica di Dottorato". During the PhD program she visiting scholar at De Groote School of Business – McMaster University (Hamilton, ON, Canada) and at IESE Business School – University of Navarra (Barcelona, Spain). During 2007-2009 she collaborated to the writing of the proposal and then conducted research activities, both in Italy and in Canada, for the international research project “Sustainability Knowledge Integration Mechanisms (SKIMs) and Green Product Strategies in Canada and Italy: A Cross-Cultural Perspective” granted by the “Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRCC)” and jointly conducted by McMaster University and Politecnico di Bari. In 2009 she was selected as a Research Fellow of the Aspen Institute (New York, USA) and she has been Aspen Junior Fellow of the Aspen Institute Italia (2010-2014). During 2010 and 2011 she was Post-doc Research Fellow at the Department of Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development of Politecnico di Bari, conducting research on companies’ green innovation strategies, and Contract Professor of Elements of Economics at the same university. Since December 2011 she is Assistant Professor in Management Engineering at the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti” of Sapienza University of Rome. In January 2014 she obtained the Italian Professorship Qualification for Associate Professor. Her main research interests relate to the integration of environmental sustainability into companies’ strategies and new product development. She is author of a book and of several papers published in international journals, including Business Strategy & the Environment, Journal of Business Ethics, and Journal of Product Innovation Management. She is ad-hoc reviewer for several international journals.
