Abstract: Modern computing systems exhibit a high level of complexity influenced by various concurrent factors. Additionally, these systems often operate in adversarial environments where malicious users attempt to manipulate their intended functionality. Developing comprehensive security solutions necessitates a multi-layered examination of complex systems, encompassing low-level technical considerations and the system's role within intricate scenarios involving interactions with both humans and other systems. This presentation provides a concise exploration of noteworthy challenges in this domain, highlighting contributions made in recent years. Taking a bottom-up approach, we will initially delve into the secure design of software, addressing how known vulnerabilities can be identified in production-level software. Subsequently, we will explore strategies for fortifying complex ecosystems through cybersecurity frameworks. The discussion aims to offer insights into enhancing security measures across various layers of system architecture.
 
 
Short bio: Leonardo Querzoni is an associate professor at Sapienza University of Rome. He is engaged in teaching and research activities in various fields, ranging from cybersecurity to resilient distributed systems. He is the author of over 100 articles published in some of the most prestigious scientific journals and international symposia. He is a co-author of the National Framework for Cybersecurity and Data Protection, which is now an integral part of the Italian legislation on cybersecurity. He has received numerous research awards at the international level and has secured funding for numerous research projects in the field of cybersecurity, both at the Italian and European levels. Since 2023, he has been a member of the steering committee of the ACM EUROSYS International Conference and since 2019 of the ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based Systems. In 2022, he led the development of a doctoral program in collaboration between Sapienza University and LUISS, a program that he currently coordinates. Since 2022, he has also served as the President of the CYBER 4.0 National Competence Center, an association focused on innovation and technological transfer that includes 45 members, including 9 universities and the major Italian industrial players in the cybersecurity sector.
