Leader of the research group in Artificial Intelligence at DIS, the Department of Computer and System Sciences of the University of Rome "La Sapienza", she has carried on research on knowledge representation in AI and its application to the development of advanced systems. She has given invited lectures at ECAI'84, SCAI'91 and ECAI'96. Founder and first president of AI*IA, the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence, fellow of AAAI sice 1995. Program chair for ECAI'90 and KRR'96, trustee for IJCAI since 1995, conference chair of IJCAI'99. She has participated in ESPRIT projects (Alpes, Compulog I and II, and MedLar II), and working groups (LAC). Past coordinator of Compulog net 1 and 2. Expert in evaluation and review committees for ESPRIT, IMI, MURST, consultant for the Italian Ministry of Interior, she helds research contracts with ASI and CNR.
