The need for robots in response situations has never been greater and the technology exists to significantly improve the capabilities of robots to meet such needs. In this talk, we will discuss how we are applying measurement science in novel ways to help drive the development and ultimate use of new capabilities for response robots. The Standard Test Methods for Response Robots that we are developing not only measure performance, but also serve as a common language between responders, manufacturers, researchers, test administrators, and government. In particular, we will discuss the associated academic events, such as competitions and summer schools, that help to bring the academic community closer to the needs of the responders while, at the same time, informing the responders and government agencies as to the capabilities of the present and future.
