DESCRIPTION:This lecture will explore how artificial intelligence is reshap
 ing our societies and creating new opportunities to address global challen
 ges. In particular\, it will examine how AI can strengthen our ability to 
 detect and respond to security threats\, while also considering the unprec
 edented challenges arising from its growing use. The lecture will highligh
 t the importance of international cooperation in shaping this transformati
 on and the role of the United Nations in fostering responsible and inclusi
 ve AI governance to ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably.Bi
 o: Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala is the Rector of the United Nations University 
 and an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously\, he serv
 ed as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg. He holds a PhD fr
 om the University of Cambridge and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering fr
 om the University of Pretoria. His research applies artificial intelligenc
 e across disciplines\, including engineering\, economics\, finance\, medic
 ine\, and the social sciences. Prof. Marwala is a member of the UN Secreta
 ry-General’s Scientific Advisory Board\, the author of more than 30 books\
 , and co-holder of five patents. He is\, inter alia\, a Fellow of the Amer
 ican Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the World Academy of Sciences\, the Ac
 ademy of Science of South Africa\, and the African Academy of Sciences\, a
