Algorithm Engineering Lab

Head: Dr. Camil Demetrescu

The research activity of Laboratory of Algorithm Engineering focuses on the design, engineering, theoretical and experimental performance analysis of combinatorial algorithms for problems arising in modern Computer Systems and Networks, and in applications related to complex resource management problems. Main research interests deal with the solution of optimization problems and the design of efficient data structures, with special emphasis on those applications involving large data sets.

Middleware Lab (MIDLAB)

Head: Prof. Roberto Baldoni

Middleware has emerged as a critical second level of the enterprise IT infrastructure. Even though this software is not visible to users, it enables resource management and systems interoperabilty across a distributed system in either a peer-to-peer or a client/server fashion despite differences in OS platforms, networks and data schemas. The primary goal of MIDLAB is to support leading-edge research and development on middleware bridging the gap between the latest research results and the current technologies. In particular main MIDLAB targets are the study, the design and analysis of novel middleware platforms able to increase the robustness of information exchanging with respect to reliability, consistency, predictability and security.

Intelligent Systems for Emergencies and Civil Defense (SIED)

Head: Prof. Daniele Nardi

SIED Laboratory aimed to carry out activities to develop methodologies, techniques and tools to be used in rescue operations. We are currently working out and experimenting to reach two specific goals: (i) Simulation Systems, to build monitoring and decision supporting tools for taking actions in real time. (ii) Mobile Robotic Platforms, which are able to perform tasks like victims detection and exploration in post-event scenarios that are high-risky for human operators.

Cognitive Robotics Lab (ALCOR)

Head: Prof. Fiora Pirri

ALCOR Laboratory owns some mobile robots with different intervention capabilities for different terrain conditions. Perception is provided by audio and video acquisition devices such as cameras, microphones, sonar sensors, stereo rigs, laser scanners, pan tilts, accelerometers etc. used to realize dynamic perception networks The research and development activities are mainly concerned with algorithms for visual recognition, human and object tracking, multi agent systems, camera networks, planning for complex tasks, gestures, shapes and concept learning." .

Data and Service Integration Lab (DASI Lab)

Head: Prof. Maurizio Lenzerini

Data and Service Integration Lab (DASIlab), consisting of 8 researchers, investigates techniques and develops innovative software prototypes in the areas of Data & Knowledge & Ontology Integration, Service oriented Computing, Process Management, Mobile Computing, HCI, Usability. It is in charge of various Italian and EU projects. It has released in the last years various tools and methods, including ROME4EU, StreamComplete, WSCE, PARIDE. Its primary application domains are eGovernment, emergency management, IP television, domotics and home care assistance." .

Wireless Sensor Network Lab

Head: Dr. Andrea Vitaletti

In the Wireless Sensor Network lab we experiment new and innovative solution based on wireless ad-hoc and multi-hop networks consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions (such as temperature, light, humidity, PH etc.). In our lab, we first test our solutions on simulators (e.g. NS2, OMNET++, TOSSIM) and then we deploy them in small, but significant testbeds, typically made of heterogeneous HW (TelosB and SUN SPOT), in order to verify their performances on real environments. Recently we started a cooperation with the Sovrintendenza Archeologica di Roma to monitor the ancient roman remains at the basement of our department.

Joint-Lab on Security Research

Head: Prof. Roberto Baldoni

The Joint-Lab on security research has the mission to create a critical mass of system researchers at Sapienza Università di Roma with expertise in the development of secure and reliable systems for such domains. The team includes experts in HW design, networking, system and software security, applications and services development. Results of research of the joint-lab are heavily oriented toward innovation and the creation of early stage technology companies." .

Software Development Lab

Head: Dr. Massimo Mecella

The Software Development Laboratory is dedicated to the development of software prototypes, to be jointly carried out through Bachelor [Laurea] and Master [Laurea Magistrale] students, Ph.D. students, short-term collaborators. It consists of about 50 places, half of which equipped with high-end workstations, and the other half with dock stations for own laptops. Moreover, PDAs and smartphones, TinyOS sensors, SUN Spot sensors and a domotic kit complete the available equipment.

Cognitive Robot Teams Lab (ROCOCO)

Head: Prof. Luca Iocchi

The laboratory on Cognitive Robot Teams (ROCOCO) aims at studying and implementing teams of robots that perform cognitive tasks by exploiting their ability to cooperate. The main testbeds currently addressed are Robot Soccer, through the participation in the RoboCup scientific competitions and Rescue Robotics, through a collaboration with the Italian Firemen Brigades.

Lab on Web Algorithmics and Data Mining (WADAM)

Head: Prof. Aris Anagnostopoulos

The WADAM lab focuses on the study of problems related to the web, social networks, and data mining. Topics of interests are graph mining, randomized and approximation algorithms, online auctions, graph mining, recommender systems, and crowdsourcing. We analyze problems through a modeling, algorithmic, as well as a data-oriented approach, with particular emphasis on big-data settings.
