Roberto Baldoni
Roberto Baldoni conducts research (from theory to practice) in the fields of distributed, pervasive and p2p computing, middleware platforms and information systems infrastructure with a specific emphasis on dependability and security aspects (here for the complete cv). He is the founder of MIDdleware LABoratory (MIDLAB) and he has been PI of many national and international research projects for a overall funding of over 20 Millions euros.
Roberto Baldoni has been visiting researcher at INRIA, Cornell University, EPFL and Southampton University. He regularly participates and chairs committees of premiership international conferences and workshops. He recently chaired OPODIS 2012, ACM DEBS 2008, OPODIS2013. From Jan. 1st 2013 to 31 dec 2015th, Roberto Baldoni has been Chair of the IEEE committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance and Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks. He is also member of the IFIP WG 10.4 and member of the steering committees of ACM DEBS (Conference on Distributed Event Based Systems) At the national level he has been the founder of the Italian Conference on Cybersecurity (ITASEC). He has been for many years member of the editorial boad of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He has been Dean of the School of Engineering in Computer Science at Sapienza University (2011-2014).
Before being on leave Roberto was:
- Director of the Sapienza Research Center for Cyber Intelligence and Information Security (CIS).
- Director of the Cyber Security National Laboratory at Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale Informatica
- Coordinator of the National Committee for Cybersecurity Research born on February 2017 as an agreement between CNR and CINI
- CoFounder and President of Over Technologies. a Sapienza Spinoff on Smart Spaces Engineering.
- Italian Chair of the Cyber Security Working Group of the IT-US Bilateral Science & Technology Cooperation.
- Project Coordinator of FILIERASICURA (Securing the Supply Chain of Domestic Critical Infrastructures from Cyber Attacks). FILIERASICURA is a Research Project funded by Cisco Research and Leonardo SpA whose consortium has a critical mass of academic scientists from 8 among the most prestigious Italian Universities
- Chair of the steering committee of DISC (International Symposium of Distributed Computing).
Roberto Baldoni's research interests are: Distributed and Secure Computing, Mobile Computing, Communication Protocols, Middleware, Information Systems, Critical Infrastructure Protection. In these areas he has published over 80 papers in international journals with review process and 160 conferences and workshops, dealing with issues related to the (cyber)security, consistency and resilience of such systems. In the last ten years he developed, more and more, a multidisciplinary nature of its work including policy, economic and government factors witnessed by several publications, keynotes and invited talk that are not related to the classical area of distributed systems and event processing.
Roberto Baldoni has been awarded with two best conference paper awards. Moreover he is recipient of the

- IBM Faculty Award (2010) for outstanding work on big data for security
- Service2Business Award (2010) for outstanding work on smart distributed systems
- Event Processing Technical Society Innovation Award (2011) for the development of the COMIFIN prototype work on big data for security
- IBM Faculty Award (2012) for outstanding work on smart distributed systems
- Royal Academy of Engineering fellowship (2015) for a project on Fundamentals on IoT security
- ACM DEBS Test-of-Time - ToT Award – (2017) for the paper “TERA: topic-based event routing for peer-to-peer architectures” R Baldoni, R Beraldi, V Quema, L Querzoni published at ACM DEBS 2007
- DIMVA-2019 - Best Paper Runner-up Award (2019) for the paper “SAFE: SelfAttentive Function Embeddings for Binary Similarity” Luca Massarelli, Giuseppe Di Luna, Fabio Petroni, Roberto Baldoni e Leonardo Querzoni.
He has been awarded as Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the President of Italian Republic for his service in the field of cybersecurity.
